The deal you propose to other websites is very simple: “If you send me visitors, I will pay you a commission on resulting sales”.

Why does this work?

Well, for the owner of another website, it doesn’t cost anything to make a link to your website. If the product/service you offer fits the profile of the visitors of that other website it can even be considered a service to offer them to visit your website. If the commission is high enough (depending on the NUMBER of clients that might buy and their AVERAGE spent), other websites will also want to be an affiliate.

Why doesn’t it ALWAYS work?

Well, what security does the owner of the other website have that you ARE in fact going to pay. What better assurance can you offer but “just trust me”. Will you have a monitoring system in place, whereby your affiliates can check how many visitors they have sent, how many of those have requested further information (if applicable) and how many of them have bought something and what their total purchase amount accounted for? Will you pay the commission immediately, even if it were to be only 3 Euro and you’d have to pay 20 Euro to make the international money transfer? Or will you only pay once a year regardless the amount of commission to be paid? Perhaps you choose to set a minimum of 100 Euro in commission to pay out? So, how many affiliates might have to wait forever for their small commission?

Certainly, you can define a number of products and services that you do not offer yourself, but that WILL most likely be of interest to your customers. You can then research who is offering those products/services online, assess their quality and affiliate conditions, and then choose to whom you would like to send your visitors to (= link to).
